Waterhouse cruise past MoBay

The Marcel Gayle-coached Waterhouse damaged Montego Bay United from the first half and cruised to an easy 3-0 victory in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) match at Stadium East last night.

Javane Bryan secured a brace in the 11th and two minutes into first half added time, with Denardo Thomas scoring a superb 34th-minute strike to provide Waterhouse with the win.

Waterhouse, who dominated possession and goal-scoring opportunities, started in the ascendancy and got their opener through the brilliance of veteran midfielder Nickoy Christian, who placed the ball on a platter for Brown, who headed home his first goal of the new JPL season.

Bryan’s torment continued as he was expertly denied in the 24th minute by Montego Bay’s goalkeeper William Ferreira, who blocked his effort from point-blank range.

However, 10 minutes later, Thomas, with a combination of superb ball control and precise placement, got Waterhouse’s second goal through a long ball upfield from Christian.

On the stroke of the halftime whistle, Waterhouse strengthened their grip as Bryan capitalised on sloppy defending and calmly converted, leaving Montego Bay players seemingly disheartened heading into the interval.

During the second stanza, Montego Bay failed to garner meaningful goal-scoring opportunities, with Waterhouse’s goalkeeper Kemar Foster managing to save an 81st-minute penalty from Odane Nish to keep a clean sheet.

According to Damion Gordon, assistant coach of Waterhouse, they exploited certain areas on the field.

“We used the ball well, kept possession and identified areas on the pitch where we could have exploited, and we did pretty well,” Gordon said.

Neider Dos Santos, head coach of Montego Bay, was at a loss for words about their performance.

“The first half was atrocious, really, bad. The players were completely out, and it’s even difficult to comment. In the second half, we made some changes, but it was not enough after a horrible first half,” he shared.

In the day’s other game at the Stadium East Sports Complex, four first-half goals, including a brace by Kimani Arbouine, carried Arnett Gardens to an easy win and first place in the league after two games.

New head coach at Arnett, Xavier Gilbert, has cautioned his team not become complacent with the result because the season has just begun and there were tougher nights ahead of them.
